Hammer Lubricants

RDO 302ES and RDO 302ES MW

Matex RDO hammer oil, 5 gallon pailRDO 302ES is a unique product developed for all types of drilling where rock drill oils are used, such as DTH drilling, air track percussive drills, casing drivers, and top hammers. It contains proprietary lubricating compounds that do not wash off with water and prevent rust. It also has a special filming additive to prevent piston scuffing and heat buildup. The viscosity allows free flowing lubrication and will not contaminate water wells or monitoring wells.

Conventional rock drill oils can be a potential environmental concern because most drilling systems utilize an open-ended or noncirculating system, therefore discharging lubricant directly into the bore hole. Since most rock drill oils are petroleum-based, this presents an environmental threat.

RDO 302ES MW is used for drilling monitor wells because it does not introduce hydrocarbons to contaminate the samplings, while maintaining its excellent lubrication qualities. RDO 302ES MW has been approved by many engineering companies and governmental agencies on a project-by-project basis. Not using any lubricant when drilling monitor wells not only wears out the hammer and bit faster, but adds metallic contamination to the well.

RDO 302ES benefits include:

  • Extremely environmentally safe
  • Noncontamination drilling
  • Effectively lubricates the hammer while not sticking to drill pipe
  • Does not wash off with water
  • Prevents rusting during downtime

EZ Lube Hammer Lubricant

EZ Lube lubricant in caulk tubeEZ Lube is a high-tech, unique, environmentally safe lubricant with a special additive that works at the molecular level of ferrous metals (steel). It alters the metal by giving the surfaces a negative electrical charge, thus naturally opposing each other. This reduces friction more efficiently than oils that rely on a thin film to act as the friction reducer.

EZ tube is biodegradable, nontoxic, and environmentally safe. It comes in caulk tubes and is dispensed at a rate of 2 oz. every 300 feet or 4 hours of continuous drilling with a 6" hammer.

Even though you use proper lubricating techniques with rock drill oil, it may be a good idea to keep a couple of tubes on your rig in case your oiler fails or you run out of oil. It can also be used to supplement the rock drill oil by adding a couple of squirts after adding a couple of rods, as it does not adversely affect other lubricants.
